Upgrade bootcode without cable (R1/R3 and HD2 players)

Upgrade bootcode without cable (R1/R3 and HD2 players)

For R1/R3 owners:
Further analysis of the firmware from other manufacturers, as well as assistance LossLess (huge thanks to him for that!) allowed to build firmware that upgrade bootcode to 23 version.

How do:
1. Download HDP_R3_FW_121PAL_BOOTCODE_23.zip
unzip and copy install.img to stick. Put stick to player.
2. Update firmware through menu - System (maybe with "Cancel" button), or uses Soft "Reset" for players with bootcode 17 and earlier . The second way is preferable, as a fully cleans the player's memory.

For HD2 owners:
Do not do it without making sure that you have "beaten" bootcode! Check simple - insert the USB flash drive with the image of any firmware to the player, unplug the power cord, press the Reset button, and not releasing it, insert the cord. If the player has started flashing FW - all normal. And if it hangs on the inscription "Prepare to Update" - you have broken bootcode.

If you have broken bootcode, you can to flash HD2_FW_115 with update bootcode 26
Download HD2_FW_115_boot_26.zip [ 34.3 Mb ]

UPD 2011/10/10 23:00 MSK I signed firmware, and now you can flash it via menu Setup - Firmware Upgrade . If you do not succeed, see below.

Howto:
1. Download FW , copy install.img from FW archive file to USB stick, formatted FAT or ext3
2. Turn off player (by power cord!), remove any drives, includes internal HDD, from player.
3. Insert USB stick with FW image and power on player.
4. In telnet session enter next commands:
Code: Select all
stopall
echo /mnt/usbmounts/sda1/install.img > /tmp/installing_source
echo install >> /tmp/installing_source
kill -6 1

sda1 here - is a mounted USB stick with FW image.
5. Waiting the end of flashing process.

Thanks to LossLess - he is RTL guru!

Sorry for the newb question, but I couldn't help but notice the file says R3. Since you don't specify the model, am I right to assume this is safe to use on the R1 too?

Thanks!

Yep. Of course, you may use this FW on R1.

Right, just flashed mine and now it thinks it's an R3. I guess that means it worked! ;) Now on to install HD2 Beta......

Thanks Farvoice! :D

as far as i understand, you try to reflash player from it's main menu.
this case doesn't work, so you need to do following:
1. put install.img with bootcode firmware into usb flash drive, formatted in fat filesystem
2. telnet device and type command
Code: Select all
echo "        " | dd of=/dev/mtdblock/0 bs=2048 seek=8192

3. put usb flash drive into usb port and type reboot in telnet session
4. player go to reflash
5. done!
now you got bootcode ver.23 and firmware from hdp-r3 ver 1.21 :D
