Soft "Reset" for players with bootcode 17 and earlier

Soft "Reset" for players with bootcode 17 and earlier

Postby FarVoice » 30 Oct 2010, 10:50

Digging in bootrom and foreign firmwares prompted the method of clearing the memory before flashing.
In a terminal type the following command
Code: Select all
echo "        " | dd of=/dev/mtdblock/0 bs=2048 seek=8192

Turning off the power player, insert the stick with the right firmware includes.
Turn on. The player goes on to re-flash.
Be careful when dialing numbers - any mistake can lead to turning your player into a brick!
Everything you do, you do at your own risk! Everything, that you do not - you just do not

To attention of HD2 owners!!!!!!!! Unfortunately, owing to Asus, on the market is the party of players with a "beaten" boot-code, to be exact, with the block of restoration "rescue". If through the reset button the player is not updating FW, don't do anything, first - you must to update boot through a serial cable, details here viewtopic.php?p=2522#p2522

Works great!

I was using HD2 beta firmware on my 17 bootcode O!Play R1 and opened a telnet session to the unit. I've inserted a stick with 1.33P firmware. I used the code provided by Farvoice and used the "reboot" command to reboot the unit. The unit restarted and installed the 1.33P firmware without any problem.

Hi from Germany,
I'm interested, to release a higher bootcode to my player than the "17", I currently have. Would be nice, to have the chance for an easier recovery per reset-button in the future....

General question: Is there a minimum requirement regarding firmware-version in order to perform this change? My current one on the R1 is 1.24P - and I possibly would like to avoid all this bugged garbage, that Asus released in recent months.

I'm asking, because when i sign in into telnet with the IP of my player, I get the response:

warning: cannot change to home directory

What does it mean?

My system is Windows XP Professional (with SP3)

Rgds.

you will not need any telnet or terminal command by following this simple procedure:

1. Plug in USB drive which has install.img
2. Turn O!Play on
3. Wait until it is ready.
4. Choose: Setup > System > SystemUpdate > SystemReinstall
5. You will get message "This image is not for this board".
6. Choose: SystemUpdate again but this time you choose Cancel NOT SystemReinstall
7. You will get menu like previous version of firmware. Then Choose OK and Wait for flashing

worked for my bootcode 17 just perfect with each and every update!! ;)

To Silksmooth: If you installed FW from HD2 and then you'll deside to return to own FW of player, your procedure does not work yet...

Hey guys, I'm major noob and I'm trying to update my Oplay HDP-R1 (3.2 -> 4.1).

The thread tells me to use the soft reset method but I'm not quite sure I know how to type the command in telnet (first time using telnet).

I've managed to log into the oplay using admin/admin I'm just not sure exactly what/how I'm suppose to type that command.

Is between echo " " suppose to be my Oplay's local ip (192.168.X.X)? And do I enter the rest of the line as indicated (including the | symbol?)

Sorry for the super noob questions :/ I couldn't find much searching.

Alright so I figured it out. For noobs like me, here's a step by step.

1. Download/Install putty (A telnet client)
2. Connect to your device using putty (you can find you device IP in setup->Network->Network Info). You should only need to enter the IP.
3. It'll ask you for a user name, type root
4. Type in the command listed in the first post, insert your device local IP in between the " symbols.
5. Turn off the device, plug in the USB stick with the FW update, turn on and wait. It takes about 2-3 minutes to install.

Voila.

FYI I used this on a Oplay R1
