slow WiFi, too may dropped packets

Hi,
the reason I've found this place is because I have a long standing problem with my HDP-R3.
It works OK on the analog TV, but when I turn on the HDMI TV, it slows down to a crawl and can't even play flac files. My WiFi is WEP, but I've also tried WPA. I'd have to try again, but I remember enjoying this box on HDMI when I used a plain open network.
Anyway, I've telnet in and checked ifconfig: lots of dropped packets, constantly increasing, roughly one drop every two packets:
~ # ifconfig wlan0
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 1C:4B:D6:5C:7A:0C
inet addr:192.168.69.243 Bcast:192.168.69.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:5431 errors:0 dropped:2862 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:4289 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

It goes back to normal after a reboot, but starts again in minutes or less. Everything is fine as long as the HDMI is not on.
No, there's no way I can route a cable to this box, sorry.

Sometimes playing Internet content works OK, but as soon as I browse some UPnP or Network (Samba) content: bang!

Suggestions ? Empathy ?
Cheers.
